Furniture layout planner

Arrange your furniture online, using its real dimensions

Updated

Stop guessing whether the sofa, dining table or bed will fit. Paste your furniture’s measurements, arrange every piece on a floor plan drawn to scale, and see straight away what overlaps, blocks a door or leaves no room to walk. Move things around until the layout works. It’s free for one plan.

Your furniture, not a catalogue

Most furniture planners start from a catalogue of standard pieces that you resize, or not. That’s fine for browsing ideas, but a layout is only as good as its sizes: a sofa that’s 15 cm longer than the one you drew can be the difference between fitting the wall and blocking the door.

Here, every piece is one you own (or are about to buy), at its exact size. Measure it, type it in, and that’s what goes on the plan.

Paste the whole list at once

Write one line per piece, with its name and size, in whatever units you measured in. Mixed units are fine.

3-seater sofa 214 x 92 cm
Armchair 85x85
King size bed 5ft x 6ft6
Wardrobe 1m x 60cm
Dining table 160 x 90 cm
Bookcase 32" x 12"

Each line becomes a piece coloured by type (seating, beds, tables, storage), ready to drag into place. Dining and round tables come with their chairs, and wardrobes and chests of drawers know which way they open.

Try more than one layout

Layout tips, room by room

Living room

Place the sofa first, usually facing the TV or the window, then the coffee table 40–50 cm in front of it. Keep the route from the door to the other exits clear rather than walking behind the sofa. Sizes: sofa and couch sizes.

Bedroom

The bed goes first, ideally with its head against a solid wall and 60 cm or more on the side you get in. Then check the wardrobe doors open fully without hitting the bed. Sizes: bed sizes, wardrobes and drawers.

Dining room or kitchen-diner

Plan for chairs pulled out, not tucked in: allow about 75–90 cm from the table edge to a wall, more where people walk behind. Sizes: dining tables by number of seats.

Home office

Leave about 90 cm behind the desk for the chair to roll back. Sizes: desk sizes.

The rest of the rules of thumb are in how much space to leave around furniture, and the walkway check tests them on your plan.

Moving home?

The same planner checks your furniture fits a home you haven’t moved into yet: upload the estate agent’s floor plan or describe the place, then paste your list. The step-by-step guide to planning furniture before a move covers the rest.
