Bed sizes: UK, US and Australia compared
Updated
A UK double mattress is 135 × 190 cm (4′ 6″ × 6′ 3″), a UK king is 150 × 200 cm and a super king 180 × 200 cm. In the US a full is 54 × 75 in, a queen 60 × 80 in and a king 76 × 80 in. In Australia a queen is 153 × 203 cm and a king 183 × 203 cm. The frame adds to all of these.
UK bed sizes
UK mattresses are measured in centimetres. A double is 135 cm wide, the same as the old 4′ 6″.
| Size | Mattress (W × L) | In inches |
|---|---|---|
| Small single | 75 × 190 cm | 30 × 75 in |
| Single | 90 × 190 cm | 35 × 75 in |
| Small double | 120 × 190 cm | 47 × 75 in |
| Double | 135 × 190 cm | 53 × 75 in |
| King | 150 × 200 cm | 59 × 79 in |
| Super king | 180 × 200 cm | 71 × 79 in |
US bed sizes
US mattresses are sized in inches. A queen (60 × 80 in) is the most common size for couples.
| Size | Mattress (W × L) | In inches |
|---|---|---|
| Twin | 97 × 191 cm | 38 × 75 in |
| Twin XL | 97 × 203 cm | 38 × 80 in |
| Full (double) | 137 × 191 cm | 54 × 75 in |

| King | 193 × 203 cm | 76 × 80 in |
| California king | 183 × 213 cm | 72 × 84 in |
Australian bed sizes
Australian sizes are close to US ones in name, but not identical. A queen is 153 × 203 cm.
| Size | Mattress (W × L) | In inches |
|---|---|---|
| Single | 92 × 187 cm | 36 × 74 in |
| King single | 107 × 203 cm | 42 × 80 in |
| Double | 138 × 187 cm | 54 × 74 in |
| Queen | 153 × 203 cm | 60 × 80 in |
| King | 183 × 203 cm | 72 × 80 in |
| Super king | 203 × 203 cm | 80 × 80 in |
The bed frame is bigger than the mattress
Plan with the frame size, not the mattress size. A simple metal or slatted frame adds about 5–10 cm (2–4 in) to the width and length. An upholstered frame or a sleigh bed can add 15–25 cm (6–10 in), and a headboard adds more to the length. Ottoman and storage beds also need clear floor in front of the drawers or around the lifting base.
What size room does each bed need?
Leave at least 60 cm (24 in) to walk down each side you get in from, and 70–90 cm (28–36 in) at the foot if there’s furniture or a door there. As a rough guide:
| Bed | Room for a comfortable fit | Smallest workable |
|---|---|---|
| UK double, 135 × 190 cm | about 2.7 × 3.0 m (9 × 10 ft) | about 2.6 × 2.6 m (8′ 6″ × 8′ 6″) |
| UK king, 150 × 200 cm | about 2.9 × 3.1 m (9′ 6″ × 10′ 2″) | about 2.7 × 2.7 m (8′ 10″ × 8′ 10″) |
| US/AU queen, 152 × 203 cm | about 3.0 × 3.0 m (10 × 10 ft) | about 2.8 × 2.7 m (9′ 2″ × 8′ 10″) |
| US king, 193 × 203 cm | about 3.4 × 3.2 m (11 × 10′ 6″) | about 3.2 × 2.8 m (10′ 6″ × 9′ 2″) |
