Free room planner: see what fits before you move anything
Updated
movinghouse.app is a free online room planner. Draw your room to scale, add your sofa, bed, table and wardrobe at their real sizes, and try layouts until one works. It flags furniture that overlaps, sticks out of the room or blocks a door, and shows where the walkways get tight. It runs in your browser, with nothing to download.
What you can do for free
- Draw rooms to scale: type the wall lengths or drag corners, then add doors with their swing, windows, fitted kitchens and built-in cupboards. One plan can be a single room or a whole home.
- Add furniture at its real size: paste a list like “Sofa 210 x 95 cm” or “Bed 4'6 x 6'3”, in any units, or add pieces one at a time.
- Drag, rotate and snap to walls, and undo anything.
- Get warnings for overlaps, furniture outside a room and door swings that hit something.
- Check the walkways: routes from the outside doors into every room, shaded where furniture narrows the way. How the walkway check works.
- Have the plan drawn for you once: describe the place in a sentence or two and it’s sketched to scale.
- Share a read-only link or download a PNG, in metric or imperial.
The free planner covers one plan with unlimited furniture, and it doesn’t expire. The optional Moving Pass (£10 (CHF 10 in your currency), one-off, never renews) adds more plans, floor plan import from an image, more plans drawn from descriptions and automatic layout suggestions.
Plan a room in three steps
- Measure the room wall to wall, and note where the doors, windows and radiators are. Measure along the skirting, not halfway up the wall.
- Measure your furniture at its widest points: arms, feet and handles included. Not sure yet? Start from standard furniture sizes and swap in the real ones later.
- Arrange it: biggest pieces first (bed, sofa, table, wardrobe), then the rest. Fix anything flagged red and check the walkways before you call it done.
Try it on a real plan
Not ready to draw? Open our furnished 3-bed bungalow. It’s read-only, needs no sign-in, and you can switch Walkways on to see the routes and the tight spots.
Who it’s for
- Rearranging a room you live in now, without lifting anything until you know it works.
- Buying furniture: check a new sofa, bed or dining table fits the space, and leaves room to walk, before you order it.
- Moving home: check the furniture you own fits the new place, room by room. You can upload the estate agent’s floor plan instead of drawing it.
- Downsizing: decide what comes with you and what goes.
What it doesn’t do
There’s no 3D view, no photorealistic renders and no furniture catalogue to shop from. It’s a 2D planner for one question: does your furniture fit, with room to move? If you want to try colours and finishes in 3D, a design tool like Planner 5D or Floorplanner is a better fit; here’s how they compare.
Questions
Is the room planner really free?
Yes. One plan with all its furniture, the fit warnings, walkways and share links are free, with no time limit and no card. You only pay if you want the Moving Pass extras.
Do I need to download anything?
No. It runs in your browser. You sign in (Google, Microsoft or an email link) so your plan is saved.
Can I use feet and inches?
Yes. Switch between metric and imperial at any time; the plan stays the same size. Furniture lists can mix units.
Does it work on a phone?
You can open plans and move furniture on a phone, but drawing rooms to scale is easier on a laptop or desktop. Shared plans work on any device.
